Sights were noticeable at the front of the gun, above and aft of the muzzle.Ī key difference of the Model 1861 Navy over that of the preceding Model 1851 Navy was the use of a 7.5 inch rounded barrel assembly as opposed to the latter's octagonal shaped form. The forward portion of the gun underside contained a webbed contour fitted against the barrel underside, presenting the basic Samuel Colt revolver shape. 36 caliber ammunition and did not feature a "bridge" to frame the cylinder within the gun body (as found on the successful line of competing robust Remington brand revolvers). The hammer was noticeably protruding from the rear of the gun body which was of casehardened metal. It featured a curved, single-piece walnut wooden handle with an equally curved trigger system encircled by a brass trigger guard. Will report more as information becomes available.Design of the Colt Model 1861 Navy was not unlike Colt's previous "Navy" offering - the Model 1851 Navy - and was essentially a refined version of the strong selling firearm. The tag on the top-right appears to be identical in design to the one found. I did find an image on the web of tags supposedly worn by Union soldiers during the Civil War. More research is needed to determine if there was an individual of the same name (father) who preceded the individual located in the graveyard and if so, could he have served in the Civil War and owned the tag. The head stone has an ornamental WWI vet flag holder planted next to it. Preliminary research of the name on the tag lead to a graveyard head stone in that same locality with dates of 1889-1972. I can tell you it was found in close proximity (within a 10 yard radius) to several Indian Head Cents, two 1870's Seated Liberty Dimes and a 1854 Seated Liberty Quarter. There does not appear to be any specific identifier for a military rank or unit. The inscription on the tag is the name and address of the individual. Was not found by me but found by another member of our group. Will have to get back to you when I can get an image of the back of the tag.
